IUI

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Also known as Artificial Insemination: A simple, safe, and effective first step.

What is IUI?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI), commonly known as artificial insemination, is a simple fertility treatment. During this procedure, healthy sperm are washed, concentrated, and injected directly into a woman’s uterus during the time of ovulation. It is often one of the first fertility treatments recommended for couples wishing to become pregnant because it is safe, less invasive, and requires no anesthesia.
The Goal: To increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tube, subsequently increasing the chance of fertilization.

How is the Procedure Performed?

The IUI process is designed to be quick and comfortable. Here is what you can expect:
  • 1. Preparation: The sperm sample is processed in the lab to concentrate the healthiest sperm.
  • 2. Insertion: Your fertility specialist inserts a small, sterile catheter through the cervical opening into the uterine cavity.
  • 3. Insemination: The prepared sperm sample is introduced into the uterus via the catheter.
  • 4. Completion: The procedure is entirely painless, takes just a few minutes, and you can resume normal activities shortly after.

When is IUI Recommended?

IUI may be indicated if you:
  • Have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility.
  • Have cervical problems that prevent sperm penetration.
  • Have been diagnosed with mild male factor infertility.
  • Are unable to have regular sexual intercourse.
  • Need to use donor sperm.

When is IUI NOT Recommended?

IUI is generally not effective for patients who have:
  • Severe male factor infertility.
  • Blocked fallopian tubes.
  • Severe endometriosis.

*In these cases, IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is usually the preferred treatment path.
